1st Week of May

The garden is really getting going. Many things are coming up. This is an updated picture of the lettuce-y thing which I don't know what it is. Can anyone help?
I think these might be scallions...


As I predicted, there are many more plants that are starting to emerge that I don't know the names of. Here are a few:

At first I very happily thought this was lavender blooming, so I picked a few stems to bring in the house. To my dismay, they did not smell like lavender. I remembered Marion telling me there was catnip somewhere, so I looked it up and, yes this is catnip. I wondered why one of the neighborhood cats was chewing on it one morning a few weeks ago.

The aspen and the maple in the front yard are sprouting some greenery.

The first tulip has bloomed and many more buds are ready.

Grape Hyacinth has been one of my favorite flowers since I saw them in Germany. I didn't know that there were any planted here, so I was exited to see them blooming with the tulips.

Some more daffodils have bloomed in the front yard.

Everything is starting to turn green, the rose bushes, honeysuckles, raspberry bushes, cherry tree, and a lot more that I will have to figure out. I hope it doesn't get too overwhelming to keep up with. But it is pretty exciting and interesting to watch everything go through each phase. I can't believe I'm actually starting to think things like 'I hope we get some rain' and 'Maybe that was the last frost,' although I've heard it could freeze again through the end of May.

I told one of my friends that the gardening genes actually did pass down to me. I remember my great grandfather pulling weeds and picking green beans off the vines that ran parallel to our driveway. Eventhough my mom was never a big gardener, she knows the name of every weed and flower native to SE Texas. This is my first yard since moving away from home and I guess it has caused my own, hopefully, green thumbs to bloom. I guess we will see in the next year or two.

The first Daffodil bloomed today or yesterday.

The Crocus in the back bloomed, on the first terrace all the way to the left. I think they looked thirsty.

OK. I have a feeling this will happen quite a few times this first year, but WHAT the HECK are these thingies???!! They look like Brussels Sprouts. They are growing by the raspberries. Does anyone know? Are they edible? Do I put them in my salad? Or will they cause gastro-intestinal failure if eaten?

The tulips will be blooming soon!! They are my favorite!

Crocus

The crocus started blooming in the front yard about the 2nd week of April, just after the blue flower. It was very sunny today, but it is pretty cool to see them coming through the snow.


Next year, I'll need to rake this area by the first week of April.

First blooms of the year

After searching for a house for a few months, I finally found one that I love. It came with a fully landscaped garden, something I've always wanted, but never had the space, time or know-how to do. I even got a tour from the previous owner of what was planted where and what would bloom when...since it was February and everything was still dead. I went straight to the house after closing to do cartwheels in my new living room. After I was satisfied with that, I did a couple of laps around the house and yard.

This blue flower was the first to bloom about the second week of April. I'm not sure what it is yet, but I will find out. They circle the maple out front.
